German synagogue defaced with swastikas

Vandalism in Dresden comes just ahead of 71st anniversary of 1938 Nazi Kristallnacht pogrom

Police in the eastern German city of Dresden say a synagogue in the city has been defaced with swastikas and other far-right symbols.

Dresden police on Sunday said the symbols were painted on an outer wall of the downtown Neue Synagoge.

There were no immediate suspects but state police are investigating.

The vandalism comes just ahead of the 71st anniversary Monday of the 1938 Nazi Kristallnacht – Night of Broken Glass – pogrom.

On that night, at least 91 German Jews were killed, more than 200 synagogues were destroyed, and more than 7,000 Jewish businesses vandalized and looted in state sanctioned, anti-Jewish riots.
