Barak: End insubordination with iron fist

Defense minister talks tough, to meet officials next week to discuss fight against disobedience

Defense Minister Ehud Barak says that an "iron fist" should be used in order too put an end to recent displays of insubordination among IDF soldiers.

"A state that seeks to survive must use an iron fist to put an end to insubordination from both the Left and Right," he said during a closed-door discussion on the issue Saturday.

The defense minister is expected to meet with intelligence and law enforcement officials in the coming week in order to discuss ways to deal with insubordination in the army.

The military has been facing a wave of disobedience displays recently, starting with an anti-evacuation sign held up by Kfir Brigade soldiers during a swearing-in ceremony at the Western Wall last month.

Later, other soldiers from the Kfir Brigade held up an anti-evacuation sign on the roof of a military structure, shortly after the army razed two illegal homes belonging to settlers in the West Bank

Most recently, a commander at the Kfir Brigade's training base found a freshly painted sign bearing the caption: "Kfir doesn't expel Jews."
