EasyJet apologizes for Shoah memorial photos

British airline withdraws from its planes some 250,000 copies of magazine showing models pose in designer clothes among the concrete blocks of Berlin's Holocaust Memorial, blames publisher for images

British airline EasyJet has apologized after fashion photographs shot at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin were published in its in-flight magazine, the British Broadcasting Cooperation reported Friday.

The budget airline says it was unaware of the images, showing models pose in designer clothes among the concrete blocks of the "Field of Stelae", until they appeared in the magazine, which is published by a company called INK.

Easyjet said that it was now reviewing its relationship with the publisher and that it would withdraw the magazine's copies, some 250,000, from its planes.

The company said in a statement that it "profusely apologizes" to anyone who was offended by the "inappropriate" shoot. "Easyjet prides itself on bringing together a wide range of cultures and beliefs and is appalled by this insensitive and inconsiderate photo shoot," the statement added.

The Berlin memorial, inaugurated in 2005, commemorates the six million Jewish victims of the Nazi genocide and is run by the Foundation for the Memorial to the Murdered Jews OF eUROPE. The Foundation said it does not approve commercial photo shoots at the memorial and only supports projects related to the Holocaust and commemoration.

According to the BBC, INK did not seek permission from the Foundation to shoot the pictures.
