PM: Syria said would relinquish Golan withdrawal as precondition

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that French President Nicolas Sarkozy had told him that the Syrians were willing to lift their precondition that Israel would withdraw from the Golan Heights ahead of peace talks.
Netanyahu added that Israel prefers talking to the Syrians directly, but that if a mediator would be required, he prefers France. (Roni Sofer and Amnon Meranda)
