UN strongly condemns Myanmar rights violations

The UN General Assembly on Thursday strongly condemned human rights violations in Myanmar and urged the country's military rulers to release more than 2,000 political prisoners including pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The nonbinding resolution also urged the government to open next year's general elections to all political parties. Suu Kyi's party, the National League for Democracy, swept the last elections in 1990, but the results were never honored by the military, which has ruled the country since 1962. (AP)
