Hamas source: Booby-trapped donations box caused Beirut blast

Source says attack on Islamist group's headquarters in southern Lebanon aimed at Osama Hamdan

A Hamas source in southern Lebanon provided AFP Monday with details on an explosion that occurred Saturday at the organization's headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

"The explosive device was placed in a donations box that arrived at the organization's headquarters and was sent to Osama Hamdan," the source said, referring to Hamas' representative in Lebanon.

The source said Hamdan and his personnel tended to park in a lot near the headquarters, but that he was away from Beirut at the time of the explosion. The C4 used in the device is considered strong but difficult to detect. The blast killed two Hamas operatives.

The device was set off while the two men were taking the box to one of the cars in the lot, the source said. A Lebanese military official reported them dead while other reports said no one had been harmed.

Hamdan had no comment when asked by AFP whether reports of the booby-trapped donations box were correct. He was questioned while attending the funeral of the two Hamas men.
