2009 sees record number of visitors in Auschwitz

Some 1.3 million people from around the world visited the Auschwitz- Birkenau Nazi death camp in the past year, which constitutes an all time record number.
Most of the site's visitors were youths, 600,000 of which were from Poland which has made the visit mandatory for students. The five leading countries in terms of number of visitors are Poland, Britain, Italy, Israel and Germany. (Sarah Stricker)
