Rightist MKs: Threats against Barak bogus

Shin Bet, defense minister's advisors behind threatening letter, National Union MKs charge

Rightist Knesset members are charging that the recent death threats against defense Minister Barak are merely a Shin Bet provocation, or a ploy by advisors aimed at boosting Barak's political status.

The National Union's Yaakov Katz said in believes the letter sent to Barak's office was meant to taint the image of the settlers.

"The Shin Bet is producing such people," Katz said in a conversation with the Knesset Channel, referring to previous Shin Bet provocateurs such as Avishai Raviv. "They create bogus letters in order to smear the (settler) public."

"This ritual usually takes place when they wish to commit a crime against the Jews, and to use the army," Katz said.

Turning his attention to the settlement construction freeze, the National Union MK said: "It won't work for them, because we shall continue to have children, we shall continue to educate them, and we shall continue to build, despite the settlement freeze and the Shin Bet agents who send letters to the defense minister…we shall overcome this period."

Meanwhile, MK Ben-Ari told the Knesset Channel that officials looking into the threats against Barak should probe Barak's own team of advisors, which he said is desperately trying to salvage the defense minister's career and the Labor party.

"Slam the Right! Tell people you're being threatened! And then he will be politically salvaged," Ben Ari said.
