Iraq Sunni leader to be kept from election

An Iraqi parliamentary committee is moving to bar a prominent Sunni politician from running in the elections due to his connections with the previous regime, raising fears over sectarian tensions.

The executive director of the Accountability and Justice Committee, Ali Faysal Allami, said the committee Thursday had disqualified Salah al-Mutlak's party from running in the March 7 vote because he had allegedly promoted former leader Saddam Hussein's ruling Baathist Party. (AP)
