10 policemen suspected of abusing Palestinian

Israel Police special patrol unit officers, detectives detained after allegedly abusing Hebron resident arrested over motorcycle theft

Investigators of the Justice Ministry's police investigations unit raided the Yarkon District Police station in Tel Aviv on Sunday and detained 10 policemen on suspicion of abusing a Palestinian detainee.

The men arrested are Israel Police special patrol unit officers and detectives. According to police sources, the 10 were detained following one arrest they carried out. The Justice Ministry confirmed that it had detained several policemen suspected of being involved in the affair.

The affair began last week, when a Hebron resident stole a motorcycle worth more than NIS 100,000. The vehicle's owner received a phone call from the thief, who offered to return the motorcycle in exchange for NIS 40,000.

The suspected policemen arrived at the meeting point in the territories, and one of the detectives posed as the vehicle owner and arrested the Palestinian. An indictment was filed against him.

The arrest is one of a string of embarrassing incidents this past year involving police officers. Last summer, two officers from the Ayalon district were arrested on suspicion of breaking into houses. One was the head of the district's detection units and the other a patrolman and intelligence coordinator. They both denied the allegations. The two were arrested after an undercover officer revealed that while guarding him they joined him in the break-ins.

Two years ago the "uniformed criminals" affair came to light, in which a police officer and three detectives were convicted for planting explosives under the car of the criminal Michael Mor in Nahariya. They both received one year's imprisonment but the public prosecutor requested that their sentence be extended.

The prosecutor asserted that the crime had required extensive planning, during which the officers adopted criminal codes of conduct.

Last month, the police investigation department submitted an indictment to the Beer Sheva District Court against a border guard (20) from Kiryat Malachi, doing his military service. According to the indictment, the accused threatened and attacked a man aged 75 and demanded money.

Also last month, Tayibe police officer Avner Dahari was convicted of stealing cell-phones from suspects arrested during the course of his work. He was convicted of abuse of office, fraud and breach of faith.
