A Qassam rocket fired from the northern Gaza Strip exploded in an open area between the Sha'ar HaNegev and Sdot Negev regional councils. There were no reports of damage or injuries.

Shortly before 11 am, a Color Red alert was sounded in a number of communities in the western Negev, which was followed by a loud blast.

The Ansar al-Sunna organization affiliated with al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the rocket.

The group also claimed responsibility for the mortar shell fired from Gaza earlier that landed in Palestinian territory.

Earlier this week, Palestinian gunmen fired at Israel. Four mortar shells were fired Sunday at a community south of Ashkelon which had apparently landed in Palestinian territory.

On Friday night, two Qassam rockets exploded in open areas in the Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council, near Sderot. A Color Red alert was heard in the town and in the Gaza vicinity area. There was no report of injuries or damage.

Later that night a mortar shell hit an open area in the Eshkol Regional Council, and in this case too caused no injuries or damage.
