Pope Benedict rejected criticism regarding the Catholic Church's behavior during the Holocaust, claiming that "the Vatican assisted Jews, and even provided shelter for many."

 

The pope spoke in response to the words of the president of Rome's Jewish community, Riccardo Pacifici, who said that the Church did not do enough to assist Jews during World War II. (AFP)
