Death of Palestinian ex-security chief's mother sparks tiff

Dahlan misses his 80-year-old mother's funeral despite being authorized by Hamas to enter Gaza

The death of a prominent Palestinian politician's mother has sparked a quarrel between rivals Fatah and Hamas.

Sariyyeh Dahlan, 80-year-old mother of Mohammed Dahlan, Gaza's former security chief, died Sunday in Gaza.

Dahlan hasn't set foot in Gaza since Hamas ousted forces loyal to Fatah in a violent takeover of Gaza in 2007. Animosity runs particularly deep between Dahlan and the Islamic militants.

Hamas officials had said they would grant Dahlan permission to come to Gaza to mourn his mother, but Fatah officials countered they won't seek permission from what they consider an illegal government and that Hamas can't be trusted not to harm Dahlan.

In the end, Dahlan missed the funeral and instead received condolences in the West Bank.
