Courts Guard decides to boost chief justice's protection following violent incident that saw court spectator throw shoe at the Bench

The Courts Guard decided to up the security around Supreme Court President Dorit Beinish, following her attack Wednesday.

 

Pini Cohen, a court spectator, threw a shoe at Beinish during a court hearing, hitting her in the face and breaking her glasses. Court presidents across the country have called an emergency meeting following the incident, to take place at the Supreme Court on Thursday.

The Courts Guard is also considering boosting security around Justice Philip Marcus, a Jerusalem Magistrate's and Family Court judge, who was threatened by Cohen in the past.

 

Cohen was arrested immediately after the incident and will be arraigned Thursday. The Courts Guard will make the final decision on judges' security accordingly.

 

Sources in the judicial system told Ynet that the possibility of installing security systems equipped with facial recognition features in the courts, meant to warn court security against any individual known as a possible threat, in now considered; but given the complexity of the matter, other alternatives are being considered as well.

 

According to initial details for the Courts Guard-Shin Bet probe, there were no security failures that contributed to the incident and Cohen was not previously flagged as a threat to the chief justice.

 

Judicial system data indicates that over 250 threats against various judges have been made since 2006.
