Settler's murderer gets life sentence

Jafar Braham, who murdered Ido Zoldan of Shavei Shomron in 2007 never expressed remorse for his actions. Trial of his two accomplices continues

The Samaria Military Court on Monday sentenced Jafar Braham to a life imprisonment for the murder of Shavei Shomron resident Ido Zoldan in 2007. Braham's accomplices are still on trial.

The prosecution emphasized the gravity of the defendant's actions, who formed an independent military cell with two other people and planned to carry out terror attacks against Israeli targets.

Braham was convicted of firing nine bullets at Zoldan near a major junction adjacent to the West Bank settlement of Kedumim, resulting in the latter's death.

According to the case file, the defendant initially tried shooting at a passing vehicle, but failed to do so since the magazine was misplaced inside his weapon. After fixing the problem, Braham and his cell members shot at Zoldan, who was driving in his car, from their vehicle.

After the shooting, the defendant and his partners collected the bullet pods from inside the vehicle, concealed them as well as the rifle, and fled the scene.

The prosecution pointed to Braham as the dominant figure in the shooting, both in planning the attack and obtaining the weapons and in carrying it out.

Braham's attorney appealed the court to exercise leniency. Braham was given a chance to express remorse for his actions, but he abstained from doing so and instead tried to justify his acts.

The judges, headed by Lieutenant-Colonel Yair Tirosh, denied Braham's motion and sentenced him to life in prison.

Zoldan, who was evicted from the settlement of Homesh during the Gaza pullout , was survived by his wife and two children. Following the disengagement he remained active as part of the Homesh First organization.

His family is well known in the Kedumim area, as his father is one of the most prominent building contractors in the Jewish communities of the West Bank.
