Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Moratinos expressed his pessimism regarding the option that Israel could join the European Union as long as Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman heads up the Foreign Ministry. "Can anyone imagine Lieberman working under foreign policy director Ashton?" wondered Moratinos in his speech at the Herzliya Conference.
However, the senior Spanish diplomat noted that if Israel were to submit a formal request for membership in the European Union, it would be considered seriously. Lieberman met with Moratinos on Monday to discuss upgrading relations between Israel and the EU. (Attila Somfalvi)
