Venezuelan police have fired tear gas, plastic bullets and water cannons to scatter hundreds of university students who attempted to hold street protests against President Hugo Chavez.
Caracas Police Chief Carlos Meza says authorities broke up the demonstration because students were not granted permission to march through the capital of Caracas on their way to the National Assembly.
Student leaders counter that they have the right to stage peaceful protests, and complain that authorities loyal to Chavez frequently deny them permission to demonstrate. (AP)
