Seventy Palestinians who tried to get into Israel illegally were caught in the cooling container of a truck near Modiin on Saturday.

Modiin police are accustomed to dealing with people trying to enter the country illegally, especially from the Jerusalem area, and for this reason they regularly put up roadblocks and check building sites. However, this time even veterans of the force were amazed by the number of people caught in one go.

The truck made its way along route 443 in the direction of Modiin from Jerusalem. It got through IDF roadblocks but was stopped by a police roadblock.

The driver and two other men were sitting in the cab, but a glance at the wheels indicated there was a lot of weight in the back. When they opened the doors, police were amazed to see dozens of people squeezed into the space, suffering from the cold.

The truck is usually used for cold haulage of meat and other products requiring a temperature-controlled environment, but this time the cargo was human. One of the Palestinians had fainted, apparently because of the crowding, and was taken for medical treatment.

A patrol vehicle was called and the stowaways were taken to Modiin police headquarters. The driver was also arrested, and the vehicle impounded.
