France concerned about Algerian proposal to try colonial-era crimes
Several officials in France expressed concerns Tuesday about a proposal by Algerian lawmakers who want to prosecute crimes committed decades ago by the French, the North African country's former colonial rulers.
The Algerian proposal has the backing of 125 deputies. French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner and several other French officials stressed that the iniative was still in the early stages, as Algeria's government has not weighed in on it and it has not been debated in parliament. (AP)
