The FBI has decided with finality that a US government researcher acted alone in the deadly 2001 anthrax mailings and is closing its long-running investigation, a person familiar with the case said Friday.
The anthrax letters were sent to US lawmakers and news organizations in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks, when hijacked airliners were flown into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in suburban Washington. The person informed of the decision to close the case was not authorized to speak about it before an official announcement expected later Friday, and therefore spoke on condition of anonymity. (AP)
