'Rabbi Yosef's son attacked in Mexico City'

Associate of Rabbi David Yosef says anti-Semitic thugs shoved him, threw eggs at him; perpetrators apprehended

Rabbi David Yosef, the son of Shas spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, was attacked by a group of anti-Semites in Mexico City, the rabbi's associates said Sunday.

Rabbi David Yosef arrived in Mexico to assist the local Jewish community in the aftermath of the death of Jewish billionaire Moshe Saba in a helicopter crash.

"(Rabbi David) Yosef spent the Sabbath in Mexico City to offer the local Jewish community spiritual support and encouragement in light of Moshe Saba's death. The attack occurred Saturday night. He left the Sha'arei Shalom synagogue and was making his way to the house he was staying in when a group of thugs carrying eggs shoved him and shouted anti-Semitic epithets," one of the rabbi's associates said.

It remains unclear whether the rabbi was familiar to the thugs or if he was chosen randomly. "I assume they (thugs) were aware that an important rabbi was visiting," said the associate.

"The rabbi's entourage protected him. He was hit by a few eggs. The synagogue's security guards chased after the perpetrators, apprehended them and turned them over to local police," he said.
