Soldier attacked in north, weapon stolen

IDF soldier waiting at hitchhiking post wounded by two men who hit him with blunt objects

An IDF soldier waiting at a hitchhiking post near the northern town of Kiryat Shmona was attacked Thursday evening and his weapon was stolen.

The 19-year-old soldier suffered light wounds in the attack.

Large police forces were called in and were scouring the area in search of the suspects. The two attackers involved in the incident first hit the soldier with blunt objects before wresting away his weapon and fleeing the scene.

The motive for the attack was initially unclear.

Galilee region police set up roadblocks in the area in a bid to nab the assailants. A helicopter was called in to assist in the search.

Magen David Adom official Shimon Abitbol told Ynet: "After receiving a call about an assaulted IDF soldier, we dispatched an intensive care ambulance and found the soldier, who sustained many blows after being hit with blunt objects."

"The soldier is fully conscious and is in stable condition," Abitbol said, adding that the attack victim was treated at the scene before being transferred to Ziv hospital in Safed.

Recent months saw several attempts to steal the weapons of IDF soldiers. Last month, a soldier was attacked in the northern town of Carmiel and sustained moderate head wounds in a similar assault. The soldier's rifle was snatched in the attack.
