IDF officer suspended over shooting on Palestinian car

Force apparently mistook car's passengers for Palestinian who threw firebombs at IDF checkpoint, opened fire in violation of army procedure

An IDF reserves officer whose soldiers opened fire on a Palestinian car travelling near the West Bank village of Hussan Saturday night has been suspended until the conclusion of a military investigation into the incident.
Four members of the same Palestinian family sustained light to moderate injuries in the shooting.
Brigadier-General Nitzan Alon, who heads the IDF's Judea and Samaria Division, arrived at the scene immediately after the incident to question the soldiers.
An initial investigation has raised concerns that the officer, a lieutenant, violated army regulations determining when soldiers are allowed to open fire. The officer apparently mistook the car's passengers for other Palestinians who had thrown firebombs on a nearby IDF checkpoint.
Military Police is expected to wrap up the investigation in the coming days, after which the army will consider additional action against the officer.
