UN team to neutralize unexploded ordnance in Gaza

Chief of Staff permits entry of special bomb disposal unit; operation aimed at preventing further civilian casualties following Operation Cast Lead

Over a year after the conclusion of Operation Cast Lead, a special UN bomb disposal unit on Wednesday will enter the Gaza Strip in order to dispose of unexploded ordnance left behind following the operation.

The IDF Spokesperson's Unit said Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi approved the special unit's entry to the Strip, adding that Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories Brig. Gen. Eitan Dangot will coordinate and enable the team to enter through Erez crossing in the northern Strip.

"This operation will take several months, and its main purpose is to prevent civilian injuries. Several explosions might be heard throughout the Gaza vicinity communities during the activity," said the Spokesperson's Unit.

In April 2009, Palestinians reported four teens were injured from an explosion of an old IDF artillery shell dud in the Zeitoun neighborhood, located in the eastern part of Gaza City.

One of the injured was seriously hurt, another person sustained moderate wounds and the other two were lightly injured.
