UN sappers detonate leftover shells from Gaza war

Mine Action Team says collected 340 unexploded bombs, shells fired during IDF's three-week offensive in Hamas-ruled territory, adding that 10 Gazans killed since then by exploding munitions

United Nations explosives experts have blown up several Israeli white phosphorous shells as they try to rid Gaza of munitions left behind in last year's war.

Kerei Ruru of the UN Mine Action Team says his staff has collected 340 unexploded bombs and shells fired during Israel's three-week offensive in Gaza. They include 84 white phosphorous shells and seven 1-ton bombs dropped by aircraft.

He says 10 Gazans have been killed by exploding munitions since the war's end in January 2009.

Ruru said Monday's detonation was only the second they have carried out because of delays caused by Israel's government and Gaza's Hamas rulers.

Hamas officials also keep their own stockpiles of unexploded ordnance.
