Police in Kyrgyzstan arrested about 20 opposition activists Tuesday as they tried to break through a police cordon at a government conference, police and opposition leaders said.
President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, under opposition pressure to resign over allegations of corruption and authoritarianism, is holding a national assembly in the capital Bishkek to drum up support for his five-year rule. (Reuters)
