David Grossman wins ACUM lifetime achievement award

Distinguished author honored by Israeli authors, composers' organization for achievements in literature

"A lifetime achievement award doesn't mean I'm recapping my career," Author David Grossman said Wednesday after being honored for his achievement in Israeli literature by ACUM, a non-profit corporation administering the rights of authors, composers, lyricists, poets, arrangers and music publishers.

"Straight after the ceremony I'm going back to work on my next life achievement," Grossman jested.

Grossman received the lifetime achievement award from journalist Nahum Barnea in a ceremony held in Tel Aviv.

"One receives a lifetime achievement award when one is recapping one's life's achievements. In David Grossman's case, the award is ahead of its time, so much so that instead of giving him an award it would have been better to organize a protest against it in front of the ACUM offices. David might have joined the protest, as he occasionally does," Barnea said.

"Seventeen books for the greater public, 13 children's books, plays, films, even a rap hit song," Barnea listed Grossman's impressive list of works to date. "He is one of the most read authors in Europe. It is safe to assume this won't be the last award he receives."

Barnea also said that Grossman is an author who best expresses the anxiety-filled reality in Israel in the most accurate and heartfelt way.

In addition to Grossman, Amos Ettinger and Kobi Oshrat were also honored for their life achievements in the field of music.
