Hamas fired 'defensively' at Israelis in Gaza

Hamas said its gunmen took part in a clash on Friday with the Israeli army near the Gaza Strip border, describing the action as defensive after troops entered Palestinian territory. Hamas, Gaza's most powerful faction, has largely held fire since its 2008-2009 war with Israel. Palestinian witnesses said Friday's exchange of fire inflicted at least one Israeli casualty.
"An Israeli army force raided 500 meters (yards) into Palestinian territory, and was confronted by our gunmen," said Abu Obeida, spokesman for the Hamas armed wing. "This was our work, but was carried out for defense." (Reuters)
