The European Union has hailed the new nuclear disarmament treaty between Russia and the US as "remarkable progress" in disarmament. Catherine Ashton, the EU foreign affairs chief, says the US-Russian accord "enhances the security of the international community as a whole."
In a statement Saturday she said the reduction of strategic nuclear warheads "will send a strong positive signal" to a nonproliferation conference in New York in May. The treaty is to be signed April 18 in Prague. Ashton said the accord will "contribute to accelerate the global disarmament efforts." (AP)
