A German hospital says Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has been released after undergoing gall bladder surgery three weeks ago. Heidelberg University Hospital said in a statement that Mubarak had "fully recovered" from the surgery and was returning to Egypt following his release on Saturday.
The 81-year-old leader had his gall bladder removed at the clinic March 6. Mubarak's term in office ends next year and concern about his health often prompts speculation about the leadership of the Arab world's most populous nation, a US ally that plays a critical role in issues ranging from Mideast peace efforts to curbing Islamic militancy.
