French parliament to debate Islamic garments

France's lower house of parliament will debate a resolution in May on regulating Islamic garments that fully cover a woman's body and face. President Nicolas Sarkozy has said such outfits are "not welcome" in France and oppress women.
The head of Sarkozy's conservative party in parliament's lower house submitted a resolution in January recommending a law banning such burqa-like garments. The National Assembly announced Tuesday that it will debate the divisive resolution May 11. France's highest administrative body warned last week that a total ban risks being found unconstitutional.
