US Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens retiring

The leader of the Supreme Court's liberal bloc, Justice John Paul Stevens, announced his retirement Friday, giving President Barack his second opening to fill on the top US court.

The retirement of Stevens, the oldest justice on the nine-member court, will not change the ideological makeup of America's top court, but it will likely provide some young blood to its liberal wing. The court became more conservative as a result of two justices selected by former President George W. Bush. (AP)
