18 killed in Bangkok protest clashes

Thailand's capital Bangkok was calm on Sunday, a day after clashes between troops and opposition activists killed 18 people in the city's historic old quarter, but any resolution of the political row seemed distant.

The fighting, the worst political violence in the nation in 18 years and some of it in well-known tourist areas of the capital, ended after security forces pulled back late on Saturday and urged the "red shirt" activists to do the same. (Reuters)
