Jerusalem official arrested in Holyland affair

Municipality official suspected of involvement in 'largest bribery scandal in Israeli history'

Police on Thursday continued their arrests of former and current high-ranking officials suspected of accepting bribes in the Holyland scandal, dubbed by a judge as the largest bribery affair in Israel's history.

After Jerusalem's former mayor, Uri Lupolianski, was arrested on suspicion he accepted bribes in the housing project scandal, officers have now arrested a high-ranking official still serving in the city's municipality.

The official also directs a large construction company formerly involved in the founding of the Holyland project. He was questioned Wednesday night, and on Thursday morning police demanded the remand of his arrest due to information gleaned from his interrogation.

Attorney Uri Messer, an affiliate of former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who has also become embroiled in the affair, was also brought before the Rishon Lezion Magistrates' Court for the remand of his arrest.

In the coming days members of the National Fraud Investigations Unit are also scheduled to interrogate Olmert, who shortened a trip abroad in order to appear before the police. The former prime minister, currently on trial for a number of various fraud charges, denies any involvement in the affair.

Meanwhile a number of others detained in the Holyland scandal have appealed to the court against the long terms of custody to which they are being subjected, which were demanded ordered by the judge at the police's demand.

Ynet also learned Thursday morning that police believe a total of around $15 million were delivered as bribes in the Holyland affair.
