Lebanon sends back Syrian soldiers' remains
Almustaqbal paper reports additional remains found at site where bodies of two Syrian soldiers killed in 1982 battle recently found
The Lebanese military on Wednesday transferred to Syria the remains of two Syrian soldiers found near the village of Sultan Yacoub last week, Lebanese media reported.
Meanwhile, Almustaqbal newspaper reported that additional remains were found in the area and were sent for tests to be identified.
The remains of the two Syrian soldiers were found several days ago by a Lebanese farmer working his land in the east of the country. He found several bones buried in the ground alongside a helmet, bullets and a Syrian military identity card.
An initial investigation revealed that the bodies belonged to two Syrian soldiers who were killed in battle with Israeli forces in the summer of 1982. The identity of one of the soldiers was determined using a DNA test.
Once the picture became clearer, Syrian authorities requested Lebanon transfer the soldiers' remains, and on Tuesday the Lebanese military tribunal decided to grant the request.
The soldiers' remains were transferred to a Syrian military delegation at the Jdeidet Yabous border crossing between the two countries.
The battle, which claimed the lives of some 20 IDF soldiers, ended with three troops missing in action to this day: Zecharia Baumel, Yehuda Katz, and Zvi Feldman.
