Bibi pessimistic ahead of Likud vote

Netanyahu says changing Likud charter, postponing party elections almost impossible mission

The attempt to change Likud's charter and postpone the next party elections is a largely impossible task, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says ahead of the Likud's Central Committee vote on the issue Thursday.

The PM, who is leading the initiative to change the charter, told a press conference Wednesday that "we are seeking to do something nearly impossible tomorrow."

The procedure for Likud elections had not been changed since Ariel Sharon's era in the party.

"Reaching a two-thirds majority in a secret vote is almost impossible, but I know that there's immense support both from my colleagues here and from Likud members," Netanyahu said. "They realize we need to focus on the essence: Security, safeguarding Jerusalem, and a responsible peace process."

The press conference was attended, among others, by Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin as well as Ministers Yuval Steinitz, Gideon Sa'ar, Michael Eitan, Limor Livnat, and Moshe Yaalon.

Likud Knesset members who already announced that they would vote against the proposed change, including Miri Regev and Danny Danon, were conspicuously absent.

Netanyahu paid special attention to Moshe Feiglin and his camp, who staunchly object to the charter's change.

"The radical and small group we face will come out to vote in full force," he said. Turning to Likud members he said: "I'm urging you to come out and vote."
