Protests, arrests across West Bank

Palestinians, leftist activists rally against security fence; journalists said to be among detainees

As is the case every Friday, hundreds of leftist and Palestinian activists protested against Israel's security fence at various sites across the West Bank.

At least nine people were detained by security forces.

The IDF Central Command confirmed that at least five demonstrators were detained at Dir Nizam, including one Israeli national. Dozens of protestors took part in the rally and hurled stones at Israeli troops.

In another protest, a Border Guard police officer sustained light wounds after a stone hurled by anti-fence protestors hit his groin.

The policeman was treated at the scene and later taken to hospital

Another four people were detained in the village of BIl'in; according to protestors, the detainees include an Israeli journalist and two members of the al-Jazeera network. About 300 people took part in the protest and used the occasion to also mark Labor Day.

J Street at rally

Meanwhile, about 300 protestors arrived for the weekly rally in east Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood against the entry of Jewish residents into the area in line with a court order.

The protestors were joined by former Meretz Chairwoman Shulamti Aloni and by a delegation of J Street leaders.

According to police, at one point demonstrators attempted to protest beyond the area approved for the rally; security forces pushed the protestors back to the designated zone using "reasonable force" and without causing injuries, a police official said.
