Syria gets observer status at global trade body

Syria has gained observer status at the World Trade Organization. The approval Tuesday by the body's 153 members paves the way for the Arab nation to eventually become a full member of the Geneva-based WTO.
Several other aspiring members including Iran and Russia have gained observer status in recent years only to see their accession process languish in committee over the technical and political objections of other nations. (AP)
