UN chief: Proximity talks encouraging

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the launch of proximity talks between Israel and the Palestinians was encouraging and expressed appreciation of the American initiative.
In a statement published in New York, Ban also expressed hopes that the parties manage to progress towards direct negotiations. (Yitzhak Benhorin, Washington)
