Turkish president approves constitutional reform

Turkey's president on Wednesday approved a constitutional reform bill sponsored by the ruling Islamist-rooted AK Party, opening the way for a referendum which secularist critics have pledged to block in court.

The government, which says the changes are needed to meet EU entry requirements, has said it wants to hold a referendum in July. (Reuters)
