Palestinians claim elderly man killed by IDF in Gaza

Israel Defense Forces say suspect shot after approaching border fence near Karni crossing. Body of 78-year-old man found in northern Gaza Strip on Saturday

The body of a 78-year-old Palestinian man was found Saturday in the northern Gaza Strip, the site of a Friday shooting incident near the border fence.

The IDF reported that a lookout spotted a Palestinian approaching the border fence area south of the Karni Crossing in the northern Gaza Strip. A force dispatched to the area opened fire and scanned the scene. The Palestinian was hit.

The body of Ahmed Matar was discovered on Saturday with gunshot wounds. The Palestinians claimed that there was an operation against an armed squad in the area, however the IDF did not confirm such reports.

Meanwhile, and regardless of the incident, rallies were held on Saturday in Gaza marking the "Nakba Day." Fatah and Hamas men marched together in several of the events.

The rallies did not include political speeches, and the protesters were asked not to waive flags affiliated with the different sects. Demonstrators held keys symbolizing ownership over houses from which they were expelled during the 1948 war. The names of their former villages, alongside "we will be back" were written on top of the keys.

Amina Hassenat, 50, marched while holding her family's ownership papers on a house currently in the area of Beersheba. "The Jews can go back to the place they came from, and we will go back to our lands," she said.

Two Israelis were injured in a separate shooting incident on Friday near Ramallah. Palestinians opened fire at their car and they were hit by shrapnel. Security forces arrived at the scene and began searching the area in an effort to locate the shooters.

The incident took place near a spot where the body of a Palestinian teen was discovered on Friday night. The Palestinians claim the youth was shot by settlers. Both Israeli and Palestinian elements are investigating the incident. A Palestinian security source told Reuters that there appears to be a connection between the teen's death and the shooting incident.
