Jaffa: Haredim protest against construction claiming ancient graves

Police says ultra-Orthodox tried to disrupt infrastructure work near Andromeda Hill, insulted officers; 17 detained

Some 20 ultra-Orthodox arrived at the Andromeda Hill area in Jaffa on Sunday to protest against infrastructure work taking place there.

The haredim, who claim ancient Jewish graves are located on the site, did not coordinate their arrival with authorities and failed to present the necessary protest permits.

Police officers who arrived on the scene in order to secure the work detained 17 ultra-Orthodox for questioning after they tried to disrupt the construction work.

"(The haredim) came to the site as a provocation and tried to disrupt the work," a Tel Aviv Police official said. "Later they insulted officers and even tried to assault them.

Also on Sunday, a group of haredim arrived at the Barzilai Medical Center to protest against the removal of ancient graves to make room for a new, fortified emergency room. Some 15 people were detained.
