Minister Yishai attacked by Neturi Karta members while arriving for condolence visit at Rabbi Elyashiv's home; he escapes unharmed

Interior Minister Eli Yishai was pelted with stones on Monday as he arrived at the Mea Shearim neighborhood in Jerusalem for a condolence visit at the home of Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv.

A group of Neturei Karta members, known for their radical opinions against Israel and Zionism,began chanting at the Shas chairman, "Shegetz" (non-Jewish boy) and "Zionist". Some punctured the tires of his car and hurled stones at him. The minister escaped unharmed and hid in the rabbi's yard.

 

Police forces were dispatched to the area to disperse the crowd.

Rabbi Elyashiv is the paramount leader of the Lithuanian haredi community. He is considered a prominent figure in the ultra-Orthodox world and has recently celebrated his 100 birthday.

 

The haredi violence in Jerusalem began on Monday afternoon after some 80 ultra-Orthodox men were arrested in Jaffa for disrupting construction works on Andromeda Hill.

 

dozens of haredi men rioted near Shabbat Square in protest of the arrest of a senior Eda Haredit member in Jaffa. The protestors blocked Bar-Ilan Road, punctured the wheels of buses, set fire to dustbins and called on the police to arrest the man immediately.
