Spain approves labor reforms to boost economy

Spain's Parliament has approved long-awaited labor market reforms designed to boost an economy saddled with a 20% jobless rate.
The package, aimed at making it easier and cheaper for companies to lay off workers, passed Tuesday in the lower chamber by a vote of 168 in favor, 8 against and 173 abstentions. That tally shows how isolated Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has become as he battles an economic crisis that has raised fears Spain might be headed for a Greek-style debt crisis. (AP)
