'Dagan quit as Israel won't accept losers'

Dubai police chief says Mossad director 'should have resigned a long time ago.' Dubai Police may issue an international Interpol arrest warrant against Dagan for involvement in Mabhouh killing, he adds

Dubai police chief Dahi Khalfan Tamim "teased" outgoing Mossad Director Meir Dagan on Sunday, saying that the latter was forced to quit as Israelis "will never accept losers among them."

Tamim was addressing the "Mossad's failure" in assassinating senior Hamas commander Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, which led to a diplomatic entanglement for the Jewish state over the use of false passports.

"Dagan should have resigned a long time ago as his intelligence service has been widely exposed by Dubai Police and the world especially with the recent expulsion of Israelis diplomats from western countries. We recommended him to save face and resign but he didn't," Tamin told the Emirates-based Gulf News newspaper.

He noted that the Dubai Police may issue an international Interpol arrest warrant against Dagan for his involvement in the Mabhouh killing.

"I would want to request for his arrest but there is a time for everything," Tamim said. "I request from the Arab countries to learn a lesson for this incident and not to accept having losers among them."

On Friday it was reported that Dagan's request to extend his term by another year had been denied and that he would step down in three months' time.

National Information Directorate head Nir Hefetz denied the report, saying that the prime minister "decided to extend Dagan's tenure by one year – last year. No new decision has been made since."

Major-General (res.) Dagan, 65, was appointed head of the Israeli intelligence agency in 2002 by then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. He replaced Efraim Halevy. His term was extended twice by former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, and in June 2009 Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided to keep Dagan on as Mossad chief for another year.
