Jerusalem construction plan thwarted

Jerusalem Planning and Construction Committee fails to issue permit for construction of 48 housing units in Pisgat Zeev ,after municipality's legal advisor removes vote from agenda

The Jerusalem District Planning and Construction Committee on Monday postponed a vote on a plan to build 48 housing units in a Pisgat Zeev neighborhood

The vote was dropped from the committee's agenda at the request of Meretz faction chairman at the Jerusalem city council Yosef Alalu and municipal legal advisor Yosef Havilio.

Havilio, who was approached by Alalu, ruled that "the motion must be taken off the committee's agenda."

The said construction is located near the village of Hizma, beyond the '67 borders, and is part of a plan to build 210 housing units. The committee was slated to issue a final permit that would allow construction work to begin immediately.

Alalu, who resigned as deputy mayor following the approval of the King's Garden plan, which calls for the demolition of 22 houses in Silwan's al-Bustan neighborhood, slammed the intention to approve the plan.

"There are people who try to sabotage any attempt for negotiations. The plan doesn't only ridicule national and international pressure, but also fails to take under consideration objections made by the residents," he said.

"I am sure the plan was presented to the committee without the knowledge of political officials. I hope, but am not sure, that the mayor was unaware of the plan being discussed by the committee," he said.
