Confirmation all but sure, Kagan ends testimony

None

President Barack Obama's pick for the US Supreme Court moved closer to winning confirmation to a lifetime appointment on America's top court after three days of grueling Senate questioning on issues ranging from abortion to gays in the military.

The Democratic chairman of the panel hearing the nomination, Patrick Leahy, said confidently that Elena Kagan would be confirmed. The panel was to meet Thursday for public witness testimony. Once the panel acts, the nomination goes to the full Senate. If Kagan is confirmed, it would be the first time that three of the court's nine justices were women. (AP)
