A prominent Syrian human rights activist was sentenced Sunday to three years in prison for spreading false information, Syrian human rights organization said.
The Syrian Human Rights League and six other organizations said 79-year-old Haitham al-Maleh was also convicted of "weakening national sentiments," a term often used against those who challenge the regime. The groups called Sunday's sentence "harsh and unjust." The United States and international rights watchdog Amnesty International also condemned it. (AP)
