The Judea Military Court sentenced Naif Abbiyat, the head of Fatah 'smilitary wing in Bethlehem, to two life terms and 25 years in prison for his involvement in several terror attacks.
Abbiyat was involved in a shooting attack in March 2002 that killed Dvora Friedman, and in another incident where a Palestinian suspected of collaborating with Israel was executed.
Although Abbiyat did not personally squeeze the trigger in either case, he received the maximum penalty under the law.
Abbiyat was a member of al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades from the beginning of the second Intifada and until his arrest two years ago. As part of his activity in the organization, he assisted terrorists and shooting attacks on Israeli targets and IDF forces.
In one of the incidents, Abbiyat's mission was to create a diversion in order to allow another cell to carry out a shooting attack, in which Dvora Friedman's vehicle was targeted, killing her and injuring her husband. Channel 1 news reporter Benny Lis was also lightly injured in the incident.
Abbiyat was also convicted of belonging to a cell that executed Khaled al-Adas, after determining that he collaborated with Israelis.
Abbiyat and two of his partners traveled to a distant area in Bethlehem, where they shot al-Adas.
The military court noted that the defendant played a major role in both murders, and therefore should receive a life sentence for each of them. Abbiyat was also sentenced to an additional 25 years in prison for his involvement in three other shooting attacks targeting IDF forces. No injuries were sustained in these attacks.
