Ambassador Shalev's term in UN ends

Israeli mission to UN, various diplomats, hold farewell dinner in honor of departing ambassador. Shalev's successor still unnamed

WASHINGTON – Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Prof. Gabriela Shalev's two-year term ended Thursday. Her successor has yet to be named.

Shalev and the Israeli mission to the UN marked her term's end in an event in Manhattan.

Bidding farewell to Shalev were US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice, Deputy Mission Director Daniel Carmon, Israel's Consul General in New York Asaf Shariv and his deputy and some 200 other diplomats.

Shalev's term in office was defined as successful, both by Jerusalem and by senior UN officials.

Rice, who has become a personal friend to the departing ambassador, reportedly urged Israeli officials she met with recently to extend Shalev's term.

History, said Rice, will place Shalev as one of the best representatives Israel had ever sent to the UN.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman have yet to agree on Shalev's successor.
